5 Unit Survival Race League

Beginning on August 5th in Kyoto and continuing through September 16th in Osaka all five units will participate in a league series called the 5 Unit Survival Race. During this time period, all matches between units will be considered league matches, regardless of match composition. All units will participate in an equal number of matches during league play. Title matches, dark matches, and any match that also involves an unaffiliated wrestler will not be counted. The bottom two ranking teams at the end of league play will face off in a Unit Disbands match on September 18th at Dangerous Gate. The composition of this match will be determined by the amount of members of the participating units. For example, if both units have five members but a member of one of the units has a scheduled championship match then the disbandment match will be done 4 vs. 4.

The participating units are:
Over Generation
Tribe Vanguard

Dead or Alive Main Event Rules

The rules for the Dead or Alive 2017 steel cage main event have been announced and are as follows.

-Flags will be place at the top of the cage at each corner. The Dream Gate title belt will be placed on the center pole.
-The Takagi, Kong, Hulk, & Doi must first retrieve a flag. Once they have done so, they will gain Dream Gate challenger status.
-The four challengers can be eliminated via pin or submission at any time during the match. This can occur before they are able to retrieve a challenger flag. An eliminated competitor must leave the cage.
-YAMATO must compete during the entire match, but will not be able to retrieve the title belt until there is only 1 challenger remaining. He can not be eliminated via pin fall or submission at any point during the match.
-The match will progress until YAMATO and 1 challenger remain. The match can then be won by retrieving the Dream Gate title belt to win.
-The final competitor left in the cage will lose their hair or mask.

State of the Union

This week, give or take, is the 16th anniversary of this site. It has existed in many forms. The Unofficial Toryumon Homepage, Toryumon USA, Dragon Gate USA, DGUSA, and now iHeartDG. Thank you for reading and supporting us over the years. Whether you are a new fan or a long time one, I hope you find the information here useful.

This has been a very eventful year, so I thought this would be a good time to talk a bit about the changes that have occurred over the last 12 months and how things will be going forward. There has been a lot of good, and some disappointment this year.

One year ago we launched the International Web Shop. It didn’t go smoothly. The original plan of actually keeping stock on hand just didn’t pan out so we had to change to the current method of shipping items once or twice a month, depending on how often I am able to meet with the company. In some cases this creates extreme delays. In other cases, items that are ordered become sold out over the course of the house show circuit and orders have to be refunded. Fans at live events will always get priority when it comes to stock, sadly. The lines of communication have improved from the first few months so things are a lot smoother. If you were turned off by how bad things were in the first few months, I hope you give us another chance.

Earlier this year, we opened official English Facebook & Twitter accounts. I was hoping to use the Facebook to replace this site entirely, with results moving over there. Unfortunately, while the company is fine with just results being posted after midnight, they do not want any of the show reports to be made available for free on an official platform. This information is only available in Japan via subscription platforms, and the company just does not want to compromise that revenue by having it for free on one of their platforms, even if it is in English. We considered adding English to those services but inevitably someone would then just post the content everywhere and defeat the purpose so it isn’t worth the effort. Thus, the Facebook has kinda become just another place to see cards and schedules. I had hoped that perhaps it would create a place for fans for discussion and the like. But, people just don’t like to converse outside of the corner of the internet they already live in, which is fine. We get a large amount of comments from people posting links to streaming sites so we would have had to disable comments sooner than later anyway. I hoped for more likes or followers but we do see new ones daily. If you haven’t, please do so. If you have, thank you. Supporting these, along with buying the Nico Nico Live broadcasts, are your best way to let Dragon Gate know you exist and want to see more from them. If there were to ever be a network/NJPW World style service, support for these things would go a hell of a long way towards making sure it was available in English.

As for this site itself. It will continue to run. However, my life has gone through a huge upheaval over the last year and a half. I’ve moved to a different country, gone from working a job that gave me nothing but free time to working a job that gives me no free time. I’ve dealt with health issues and injuries. Consequently, the site has suffered. The roster page is woefully out of date. I’ll try to get it up to speed once the current unit situation settles down. The biggest change is the speed of updates. I always made it a goal to get a report up, even if it is just preliminary, before going to bed. Well. I’m getting old. I want to go to just go to bed now. Reports will be late. Korakuen Hall reports in particular will generally always be posted the following morning now.

Even if it is fragmented, I feel like the English speaking Dragon Gate fan base is as large as it has ever been. I hope I still make worthwhile contributions to discussion by making things more accessible. Thank you again for your support. On to year 17.

Masato Yoshino injured

Masato Yoshino suffered a right knee injury yesterday in Korakuen Hall. He has been pulled from shows for the time being. Card updates will be released soon.

Statement regarding the vacancy of the Owarai Gate

Masato Yoshino has been officially stripped off the Open the Owarai Gate championship for failing to defend the title within the last 3 months. The title is currently vacant.

When asked for a statement, Yoshino mentioned he was surprised to hear this rule actually applies to the Owarai Gate. He noted he actually won the title 4 months ago, so he has been illegitimately calling himself champion for the last month. He hopes he gets another chance at the title someday. He said he was sorry to all the fans who he let down.
